How to: Customer pre-orders food for their selected date/time

Hello, 

Is there a way to either allow pre-orders, or connect Appointments to my "items" library? 

I run an at-home bakery and offering pre-orders is important for me. The most common case is "I'd like to order a birthday cake to be ready on (date)"

I would like to offer that my customers select their own pickup or delivery date and time. The online store seems limited in that it does not allow this, it only allows immediate orders with my "required prep time". This isn't helpful because my prep time is 3 days, but they may want their order ready 3 months from now. The Appointments application looked promising, but it is limited in that it doesn't allow "items", only "services".
