How can I force a modifier without having one pre-selected?
We have several items that require specific choices before proceeding to payment. For example, we offer a bowl where our employees must choose between 'salsa' or 'no salsa.' I want to ensure that neither option is pre-selected, as currently seems to be the only way to enforce a choice. Is there a workaround that would require our employees to actively select one modifier without it already being chosen?

Hi @Altamont. Your understandable confusion is the biggest reason that I wish Square would remove the “Customer can only select one modifier” option from modifier set definitions. Due to a better way of customizing modifier sets at the item level, this option is really an unneeded dinosaur, especially because of what you pointed out — that there must be a default modifier if you use it. Ugh. Anyway……
- Go to your dashboard and edit one of the items that uses the modifier set in question.
- Scroll down to the Modifiers section and click the elipses (…) to the right of the modifier set.
- Click Customize
- Click Save (because you have to for some weird reason. Don’t ask me! LOL)
- At the top you can set the number of required modifiers, as well as the maximum number from the list that can be chosen (0=unlimited).
- You have the option to pre-select when you want to, but you don’t have to.
- One you have this set up as you want it, you have the option (at the bottom) to apply this customization to other items. This should keep you from having to manually bring up each item and set it up individually.
- This is important — Click Done at the top, then Save the item again.
Now you need to wait a few minutes (I’d recommend 10-15) to be sure that if you apply a change to multiple items, those changes are propagated to them all. Let me know if you run into any issues.
If my answer resolves your issue, please take a minute to mark it as Best Answer. That helps people who find this thread in the future.
