I figured out a way to get a banner notification when an online order is placed, hopefully it works for others with the same problem: I downloaded the weebly app (which hosts my square online store). I set up my ipad's notifications to display a banner for the weebly app, and I set the notification to be "persistent" instead of "temporary". 

So now, when an online oder comes in, we get a banner on our screen (we are using Square for Restaurants) that tell us there's an online order, we click on the banner, and it takes us to our online store, click on the new order, and when it opens, we see the items ordered, and it also prints to our kitchen printer at the same time.

One thing to know: do not click on the weebly banner if a customer in-store is processing a credit card payment, or else it will cancel the payment and you have to run it again.
