Inclusive Taxes for Plans

Inclusive Taxes for Plans

I sell memberships to a club using the plan feature. Different plans for different membership types. Potential customers click a link on my site and they're directed to a Square checkout page where they signup for a subscription.

Currently, taxes are not applied to those subscriptions, meaning I'm eating the cost of taxes. Please add the ability to have sales tax included in plan subscriptions that are sold online.

Re: Inclusive Taxes for Plans

Hi, again, @PSGC.  About a month ago, Square rolled out the new and improved subscriptions.  Now, when you set up plans you add items from your item library, which you have already set up to apply the correct taxes.  Here’s the help document on the new subscriptions.

While your “legacy” subscriptions still are available and you can add customers to them, you probably really want to transition all of your existing customers to use new plans/subscriptions that you set up, so that taxes are correctly calculated.  This is because the “legacy” subscriptions don’t really have the new functionality, but are there so as not to interrupt sellers who still wish to use those existing plans.

Hmmm… That made me look to be sure this wasn’t a beta test, and it’s not.  So, this is definitely a puzzle.  I’m tagging @jean_sq again, but it will probably be Monday before she gets back to you.  Unless she works weekends.  This is my “Create Plan” screen, and I can’t understand why yours would be different.

That looks like it'll do what I need. Hopefully someone from @support will be able to help me figure it out. I appreciate your help.

@TheRealChipA Thoughts on subscriptions for a buying club? Currently I have it set so they just "buy" a subscription (item for X months) for 3/6/12 months and then I change their customer directory "Group" to VIP+ so that it automatically discounts properly.

The issue is I have to manually put expiration dates in their notes. I played around with subscriptions but getting it to do what I need it to do seemed to be more difficult than my current method unless I'm missing something.

@PartyManiaMD Right now, I don’t have a better idea, unfortunately.  I am going to PM you with other things I want to say, but that I can’t say here for reasons that will be obvious.  I think you’ll find that PM encouraging.

Hi @PSGC ! With the new itemized experience for Subscriptions (currently only available through Square Online store and Dashboard), the taxes are carried over with the item settings. So, if you set up taxes on your items, then when you create a new subscription plan with that item, the sales tax settings carry over with it.

I checked your account and your account was held back from the itemized Subscriptions experience because you are a heavy user of Subscriptions with Square Online Checkout (link based subscription). Itemized subscriptions is NOT available there yet (I think it should be in a month or so?).  In order to avoid disruption/confusion when we launched the new itemized experience, we held out accounts (like yours) that were either POS subscription users (itemized subs don't exist there yet) or Square Online Checkout (you) users.

If you want to be able to sell itemized subscriptions through Square Online or Dashboard (but not Square Online Checkout), I can move your account over to the itemized subscription experience. I'll also send you a message with all these details.

Is it possible to talk to someone over the phone about this @jean_sq? I felt like I was reading Dutch there :). I would like the ability to setup subscriptions that are linked to items, and make sure that the items have tax added to them. I setup one item previously to test this, and I was able to add tax to it. But, I'm not able to link that item to a plan or subscription yet.

It sounds like you're saying I can do that now if you transfer my account to the new version/experience. Is that correct? If so, what is the downside to doing so? You didn't migrate me over for a reason, so I assume there is potential for some issues with my current subscriptions or subscribers?

Sorry, I just saw that you sent me a private message. I'll work through that. Thanks for your help on this.

Hi @PartyManiaMD , based on your description, sounds like you are looking for a way to have subscriptions automatically add subscribers into a particular customer directory group that has a discount associated with it? (and then automatically remove them from the group when their subscription has ended?)

If that's the case, then you you are correct that Subscriptions does not currently handle that. It would need to be manual like you are currently doing. The team is hoping to tackle workflows like that next year.

If I have misunderstood your request, feel free to clarify 🙂 Thank you!
