Inclusive Taxes for Plans

Inclusive Taxes for Plans

I sell memberships to a club using the plan feature. Different plans for different membership types. Potential customers click a link on my site and they're directed to a Square checkout page where they signup for a subscription.

Currently, taxes are not applied to those subscriptions, meaning I'm eating the cost of taxes. Please add the ability to have sales tax included in plan subscriptions that are sold online.

Re: Inclusive Taxes for Plans

Hi, again, @PSGC.  About a month ago, Square rolled out the new and improved subscriptions.  Now, when you set up plans you add items from your item library, which you have already set up to apply the correct taxes.  Here’s the help document on the new subscriptions.

While your “legacy” subscriptions still are available and you can add customers to them, you probably really want to transition all of your existing customers to use new plans/subscriptions that you set up, so that taxes are correctly calculated.  This is because the “legacy” subscriptions don’t really have the new functionality, but are there so as not to interrupt sellers who still wish to use those existing plans.

I agree with this.  I was helping @PSGC trying to come up with a workaround that doesn’t cause a lot of work, and couldn’t.  Currently inclusive sales taxes are at the subscription level.  This means that taxes are only included for manually added plans, not for those signed up using a link.  The sales tax should be at the plan level, or both, even.  Then taxes would be added to both manually added and link added subscriptions.

Also I’m going to clarify this request from @PSGC.  It is about PLANS, not SUBSCRIPTIONS.  Subscriptions already have inclusive taxes.  This is the problem.  They should be at the plan level, not the subscription level.

Hi @TheRealChipA @PSGC Thanks for the feedback! We know that this has been a point of friction for sellers! The team is currently working toward releasing subscriptions that are connected to items in your Square Library. This means that any taxes that you have applied to the item will carry over to the plan level and hopefully will alleviate this. issue. This capability will first be available through Square Online and Dashboard. Keep a look out on Product Updates for the launch announcement!

Very cool. That’s even better!

Thanks, @jean_sq. That will be fantastic. I'm not sure the difference between a plan and an item. Will items sold under subscriptions have the ability to be charged automatically every month the way plans do today?

@PSGC You can set up items (basically anything you sell which could include your membership) in Square Item Library. When you set up an item, you will also determine it's taxation. All of these item settings will get carried over when you create a new itemized subscription plan and choose the item from the library. This functionality for subscriptions does not exist yet but it's in the near future! Currently, subscriptions does not connect to your item library so you have to set up everything manually, which as you have discovered, is not a convenient workflow! Feel free to ask any other questions regarding subscriptions you may have!

Any update on when this will be available for subscriptions?

Awesome, thank you!

Actually, I'm not seeing this feature. When I go to create a plan I'm still see ing the same options as before (see screenshot). How do I import an item into a plan? I didn't see it in the help doc you linked.
