Disable Social Security & Medicare Deduction for J work Visas!

Disable Social Security & Medicare Deduction for J work Visas!

There is no way to turn off Social Security and Medicare from being deducted from our foreign employees working under J visas. These employees are not required to contribute to these programs because the will never have access to them in the future. This money was essentially stolen from these employees last year and we really need to have this issue solved before starting up our next summer season in May. We are happy to provide proof of Visa in order to deactivate the deduction of Social Security and Medicare for these employees.

Similarly, if you hire your own minor children they are exempt from these same things but there is no way to turn it off for them!

Square please prioritize this! Add a button in square payroll for employers to toggle on and off. We have J-1 Visa employees for 2 months of the year and need to be able to pay our team members properly

very annoying this feature is not rolled out already. This will surely make me think twice about using square payroll.

Agreed! Square please fix this. It’s not right.

Hi everyone, I'm a member of the Square Payroll team. Thank you for your feedback and calling attention to these exemptions! Our team is presently building a solution for both of the scenarios described - J-1 visa holders and children of business owners. Once available, you will be able to exempt these employees from the relevant payroll tax types.

Please stay tuned for official announcements once this feature becomes available. Thanks as always for submitting your feedback.

Can't wait for this feature. Don't want to leave square but will have to next year if this is not implemented.

Thank you Mike Dupuis Sweet Maple Cafe

@RavenJS just following up, it's been a few months since you messaged us all. I am curious if the option to opt out of medicare and social security will be added before the year end? Or what is the timeline? Thank you, sincerely!!!!

I remember wayyyy back when Square would call me and ask what I thought needed improvement, I would voice my thoughts and they were almost immediately implemented. Not only that, but they would reach out and ask me to trial the feature before they rolled it out to all customers.

I loved this and spread far and wide how Square truly worked to connect with business owners… now I’m just popping a message on a thread and waiting for a needle to be pulled from the haystack.

Quickbooks has the ability to opt out of ss and Medicare, it’s possible but Square has fallen off from my perspective… definitely not as attentive as they used to be!

@cbordo  Thank you for checking back in. The team is in active development on this fix.
We expect to release support for these tax exemptions in the first quarter of 2025, just after the new tax year begins.

@organiconthego Although some of our processes have changed, we still value your feedback. The Square Staff Customer Advisory Board, for example, is a space where we ask questions and gather opinions and feedback about our products. Participation in the panel helps drive change in the development of our products.

If that is of interest to you, please request access here. We’ll then add you to our private group within the Beta Seller Community.

Hope to see you there!
