You are correct about the Lightning connector, unfortunately there's no adapter for the USB- C connector.  You have two options, the first one is Tap and Pay whereas you don't need any hardware.  For starters, all you need is your iPhone, Square's POS App and an Apple ID.  Here's a few more details.   The second option is Square's Contactless and Chip Reader (my favorite) which also works well with Square's POS App.   It connects to your smart device via Bluetooth.  As long as you remember to keep it charged, it's really easy to use.  It's better in the long run to avoid Magstripe Transactions as things have changed sometime back - it's called a Liability Shift - see this info.
