How can I tell if a customer used a debit card or a credit card?

I called customer support and was told they are able to see what kind of card the customer is using, but that analytic is not available to me, the business owner using Square. It can be added if enough business owners request it. I'd like to know how often a customer is using debit and how often they're using credit. The service fee we pay Square should be less on debit cards because Square is not having to reimburse credit card companies for debit card transactions. So I'm wondering how much of my business uses debit. Make sense to anyone else?

Debit cards are not nessesaraly cheaper to process than credit cards.  There are still some of the same interchange fees.  % on debit may be cheaper but the per transaction fee is higher.  There are also different rates for debit accepted with pin vs as credit.  With Square, you are accepting as credit. On the flip side, some credit cards have a higher processing rate than others, so they kind of balance each other out.

When I looked at my businesses and talk to other businesses Square fees are inline with other processors and in alot of cases cheaper. This depends on your transaction averages, etc.  I just helped a friend evaluate his situation.  We looked at the last year credit card fees.  His statements show all these different percentages, much lower than Square but then added a transaction fee, PCI fee, monthly fee.  We took all that data and Square came in at an average of $100 cheaper in fees per month.
