Employees not able to use iphone Tap to Pay

Hi! I recently set up an account for our girl scout troop and added extra 'employees' via a device code. The problem is it is not allowing Tap to Pay on iphones. All permissions have been granted, the iPhone user tries to enable Tap to Pay, links Apple ID and then we get an error message. Tried two different phones with the same result. I don't have this problem on my Android. Any suggestions?

Hi @GSTroop45891.  Here’s a link to the help document on setting up tap to pay on iPhone.  I’m including it because you mentioned that you “added extra employees via a device code.”  Here’s a screen shot from the help document.  Note the red circled area.  Since you are using Square Point of Sale app, your employees can not sign in with a device code currently.  They must be signed in using the employee email/password, instead.

Thanks so much  for the quick response! They have logged out after using the device code and then signed in again using the username and password but still not able to use Tap to Pay

@GSTroop45891Ok.  More from the help document.

Please make sure your Square Point of Sale App is updated to the latest version. You will need an iPhone XS or newer and the phone must be running iOS 15.5 or later to use Tap to Pay on iPhone. Tap to Pay on iPhone is not currently available on iPad.

Have you ruled all of that out?  If so, you might want to disable tap to pay on their phones and set it up from scratch again.  Something about setting up with a device code login might have messed something up.

Also, here’s the FAQ for tap to pay. Maybe there is something that can help you here.

Lastly, it would help to see the exact error message you are getting when you try to use tap to pay.  Screen shot it, or post it here, or video or something.

Thanks!

Chip

I am having a similar issue with my Girl Scout troop.  They are using the email logins that were created through square when I created their team.  In their permissions, I clicked the box that said "configure hardware."  I have an android and tap to pay is working for me.  One of my scout families has a brand new iPhone running iOS 17.2 and it's not working for her.

Hi @GSTroop45891 👋 Thanks for reaching out! I found the following information from our Get Started With Tap to Pay on iPhone help article:

If you haven't already, set a passcode for your iPhone by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Tap to Pay on iPhone requires a device passcode.

You can enable Tap to Pay on iPhone at any time through the Square POS app.

  1. From the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen, tap ≡ More.

  2. Tap Settings > Account.

  3. Select Tap to Pay on iPhone > toggle on Tap to Pay on iPhone.

  4. Verify the correct Apple ID is shown. If not, choose Use a Different Apple ID.

  5. Select Agree & Continue to toggle on Tap to Pay on iPhone.

Note: You will not be able to use Tap to Pay on iPhone if you log in to your Square Point of Sale or Square Appointments app using a Device Code. Tap to Pay on iPhone is available with Square for Retail if you use a Device Code to log in.

Hope this helps you out, but please feel free to post a followup remark if you are still having trouble setting this up.

I figured out a solution to my issue.  I had to log into my account on someone else's iPhone (since I have an android) to get to the settings to enable tap to pay on iPhone.

I had to log into my account on my co-leader's iPhone to get tap to pay to work on iPhones.  I also have an android and tap to pay was working for me but not for anyone with an iPhone.  Once we did it with the "owner" account on her iPhone, it worked for everyone.
