I'm wondering if anyone knows if square has added a CRV option or is planning on it?
California has to add CRV to wines started Jan 1st. And that will be an annoying problem.
I've also, noticed that this has been a request to square for about 7 years. lol

This is the way Wine Stop "solved" this "CRV problem":
Goal was to add the correct CRV fee to every item without having to click on every item and/or bring up the item list more than once for each modifier.
So, here we go:
STEP 1: GO TO MODIFIERS
Set up every modifier you need in your store:
CRV $0.05 (under 24 oz)
CRV $0.10 (24 oz plus)
CRV $0.25 (boxes, bladders, etc.)
Also for any 4 or 6 packs/combos, etc:
CRV $0.20 (4 x $0.5)
CRV $0.30 (6 x $.05)
etc.
STEP 2: STILL N MODIFIERS
Click on "Apply to Items" and select JUST ONE item that needs to be charged $0.05.
Do the same with all of the other CRV categories. Always select JUST ONE item.
STEP 3: GO ITEM LIBRARY
Select YOUR $0.05 item.
Scroll down to MODIFIERS.
Click on the 3 dots to the left. It brings up a pop up with 2 choices:
- Customize
- Remove from item
Select CUSTOMIZE
A new page will load
Select "Required Modifiers: 1"
Select "Maximum Modifiers: 1"
DO NOT check off PRE-SELECTED next to the CRV amount. The reason why you shouldn't check-off PRE-SELECTED bc all of your online items will show prices that INCLUDE the CRV fee. However, the CA CRV rules state that consumers need to SEE what they are paying for. By not checking-off PRE-SELECTED the TRUE retail price will show online.
At the bottom of this page, select:
"Apply This Config To Other Items"
Select and check off all of the items that need to be charged $0.05.
Next: Select your $0.10 modifier and repeat the above.
Do the same with all of your other modifiers.
From now on you won't be able to ring up any items unless you click/highlight the CRV fee. So it's impossible to miss adding CRV!
This is the absolut fasted way to cope with the CA CRV requirements regardless of the number of items you carry in your store.
And if any of these fees ever change one only has to change the amount of each Modifier. That's it.
This 100% works, if you key-in your transactions and also on your Square website.
Online:
Prosecco $21.9 $530.16
($22.09 ea) x 24
+ CRV (0.10 ea)
9.5% Sales Tax $ 50.37
POS:
Champagne $79.99 $80.09
+ CRV
9.5% Sales Tax $ 7.61
Next, we'll test it when we scan the item.

Hey there @Honeybeard!
I'm happy to let you know that we did release this a couple of years ago. You can read more about the release here, and can find the details of the Service Charges feature here.
I hope this information is helpful!

Okay. So apparently, this doesn't work.
It doesn't allow you to have multiple prices. It's either a set price / percentage or a variable price / percentage when at the register. Which doesn't work.
I sell A LOT of different products that have different CRVs.

I found this post to be the most useful. I implemented it the way he outlined and it seems like it is going to work beautifully. I'm not sure if I'll be able to pull reports on the modifier yet but at least this prints directly on receipts and does not require another key stroke. I select a bottle of wine and it automatically adds the appropriate (pre-programmed) CRV. Now, I'm still trying to figure out if I have to accept bottles back from my customers and if so, what am I supposed to do with them?!

The only problem is that you are adding salex tax to the CRV fee. I'm dumbfounded you cannot enter a $ amount sales tax to be added to specific items (and that you have to apply a new tax to each item instead of selecting a category)

In California, CRV is taxable. Crazy, but that's our state for you.

Hmmmm I know we are all supposed to accept return bottles and cans.
But from what I remember, if they aren't sanitary, you can refuse them.
That's what I do.
I'll check that post again once this hang over is gone

What are you doing with the bottles that you take back? Are you then transporting them to a recycling station?

We do not have to accept bottles because we are not within a mile of a 2M+ grocery store. Am I interpreting this correctly? Thanks. https://calrecycle.ca.gov/BevContainer/Retailers/

That is helpful, but according to the last webinar, wineries are Manufacturers and Distributors, but not Dealers. I'm guessing since the M & D page does not list a mandatory redemption FAQ that we are not mandated to accept them.

Hi @WineSneak - Violet here, following up for @JJ_. It looks like you still need help with this, so I kept the ball rolling on your inquiry.
From what I'm seeing in the resources JJ provided above, it looks like you should be able to use this feature in Restaurants as well since the settings we're using are at the account-level in your Dashboard.
Are you able to follow the steps to see if this works for you?
I'll keep an eye out for your reply 👀

Hi. is there a specific reason to why you responded to the person responding to my post. Where my original question has gone unresolved?
Not very professional.

We need a solution that will automatically add CRV based on bottle size. Adding it manually is error prone and we know from experience that employees will forget at times. This is a $10,000 yearly hit for us if we don't collect CRV.

I have 500 bottles of wine. They must be nuts to think we have to go through 4 steps for every item in order to solve an issue that they could fix in 30 seconds.
Why the hell are we still with these guys?

I did create a modifier anc named it CRV. Here are the problems:
- Associate has to remember to add the CRV
- CRV only adds 10 cents regardless of how many bottles of the same SKU are selected.
We NEED a better solution NOW

I can show you how to make it automatic, but it's a nightmare process.
I didn't noticed that the modifiers doesn't stack until you told me.
How the hell are we the only people to have this issue?
My concern is spending the time to make the mods automatic with every item, then suddenly these dimwits decide to add a CRV feature.
My beers (800 in stock right now) all have CRV included in the price.
But it's bad for SEO and online when your items cost $20.19 vs $19.99.

That is EXACTLY the same process I was about to tell @WineSneak
I figured out the same thing.
But you can leave on "pre-selected"
Save that screen.
THEN go to "Point of sale behavior"
Click on it aka turn on "Skip detail screen", so it's blue.
AND BOOM. It automatically adds CRV when you scan an item.
BUT you have to turn that skip detail screen on every item.
Unless you wanna bulk download and upload all your items.
Which I don't trust because square is square.
I hope that makes sense.
Side notes.
1) "apply this config to other items" doesn't work that well. I've tested this several times.
2) It doesn't do multipliers of modifications. If someone buys 12 bottles of the same product. It will only charge them the programmed CRV once.

Response deleted, as our tests have shown that our approach works when keyed-in and also online. We're going to test this set-up with our scanner next.
