Owner name change

My last name changed in 2015, but why can I not change it in my account?

Re: Owner name change - Status changed to: Not currently planned

Hi @hairbydani - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community👋

I went ahead and merged your post to an existing thread where other Square Sellers have discussed this topic as well. We merge duplicate conversations together to keep like comments in one place, and to make it easier for others to find the thread in the future.

At this time, the ability to edit the Owner's name listed on a Square account is a feature request. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post from one of our Seller Community Moderators.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates in our Seller Community.

I just got divorced and changed my name. Did you find a way to change the account owner name without closing your existing account and opening a new one?

Hi @JenniferLMT - Welcome to The Seller Community, it's always nice to see a new face 😊

Great Question.

Unfortunately, Square accounts cannot be transferred as they are tied to the SSN of the original account owner. At this time, to change the name on the account you would need to open a new account in order to use it.

As always, feel free to stop by The Community with question, concerns and even feature requests. We are more than happy to assist.

I am in the same boat. I was recently married and changed my last name. My social is the same (obviously) so why can't I edit my last name. This seems like a simple solution that square needs to fix.

What is the status of this feature request. This response was posted almost a year ago and appears to still be an issue. It's absolutely ridiculous. Female business owners in particular change their last name and this should be a simple fix.

This amazingly backwards and out dated!! As a woman small business owner, because of a life change, I am forced to recreate a business platform that works well for me.    My name is obviously tied to my SSN.  Providing proof of name change should be sufficient to maintain my original account.  Going through a name change is time consuming & you have added to that list.

There is no reason to not allow a name change as long as you can provide the appropriate documents.  There needs to be a way to do this FROM a security point of view.  I work in Cyber Security and saying you can't change it is in fact a security issue in and of itself.  A. if the "owner is a former employee who is let go or leaves with prejudice, they can do some serious damage if there is no way to remove them as the "owner."  B. Forcing businesses to open a new account will cost the business all of their history that they need, client records, and financial data.  At the very least you could offer to create the new account for the business and migrate the history and settings for them for a small fee once you receive the corroborating documentation. There is no excuse for this.  If Square will not address this in a reasonable amount of time, I recommend moving to another company.

Hear! Hear!

Did you ever get an answer to this? Do we have to do a change of ownership just because our last name has changed?

absolutely ridiculous. A name change is NOT a transfer of ownership, and now my SS# does not match the name on my account. I won't be making a new account any time soon, as this is NOT a transfer of ownership. Also, it's not just women who are impacted by this, it is *anyone* who changes their name for *any reason*.

Any update on this? I also had a legal name change and need my name updated in my account.
