I am looking to implement a yearly subscription model through Square. The goal is to automatically provide members with a complimentary, pre-determined product every year as part of their subscription benefits. Additionally, members should receive custom pricing on all other products throughout their subscription period.
To do this, I have created a subscription item in the Square Online Dashboard and set up a customer group that includes all members who have purchased the subscription within the past 12 months. However, I am encountering challenges in automating the distribution of the complimentary product, particularly because the free item includes customizable options that require input from the customer at the time of redemption.
Could you advise on the best way to:
- Automate the process of providing the free product annually to subscribed members?
- Allow members to select custom options for the complimentary product while ensuring the item is processed as free for eligible customers?
Any guidance on integrating these features within the Square system or suggestions for alternative approaches would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there @v12resole. You are encountering challenges because, currently, the Square Subscriptions product does not work this way. It allows us to create subscription packages but doesn’t allow for add-on benefits list free annual products and pricing breaks, other than those built into the subscriptions. While I suspect (based on feedback that I and other sellers have given) that these features are coming, the fact remains that as of today (12/3/24) you “you can’t get there from here.”
Your best option is to head over to the Square App Marketplace and look at third-party subscription apps there. One that I am aware of is Submatic, but there are others. Most of the apps in the marketplace have trial periods (or at least discounted initial month(s)) to allow you to evaluate them to be sure they meet your needs.
