Coupon for Specific Items Only Applying Discount to First item in the Order

I just created a new item coupon and it appears that the coupon functionality has been moved from Square Online to Square Marketing. Some things appear to not be working quite the same under the new system.

We offer ticketed events periodically and our club members are always given a coupon code to get $5 off each ticket. So if a club member buys 4 tickets, the coupon gives them $20 off. It has *always* worked successfully in the past.

This functionality no longer seems to work. I set up a new coupon for $5 off a specific item and even set it to allow customers to redeem the coupon more than once. However, at checkout, the coupon is only applying one time; regardless of how many tickets the customer is trying to purchase. I pasted a screen shot below of the coupon only applying one time to the item instead of two times for both tickets. It should be a $10 total discount in this case.

Maybe there is some other setting in the new setup I am missing? Anyone else seeing this same issue??

Side note to the Square Team: why are you now unable to edit an existing Coupon under the new format? Once activated, you can't alter the coupon which means you have to cancel it and create a brand new one from scratch.

Appreciate the help! Thank you.

I just spent over an hour with Square Support troubleshooting this issue. Guess what? This is now an 'improved feature' of Coupons in Square Marketing. Read here: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/8381-important-changes-to-your-square-online-coupons

Creating a new coupon in Square Online is not an option. Under Marketing, you have zero way of applying a $ or % off a specific item and have it apply to more than one purchased (see attached screen shot). The only way to remotely make this work is by applying a % off to all items...which only works if you limit the customer to only being able to purchase the one item you are trying to discount.

This is a serious design flaw, one that I had the Support team submit as a complaint. Whether that goes anywhere is another story. In the meantime, please let the Square Marketing team know how much you enjoy the reduced functionality.

Also, here is a screen shot of the Coupon details in case this will be of use:

We're experiencing the same issue. I set up an item coupon for $15 off each ticket, no limits on the number of times the coupon can be used.  If someone buys multiple tickets, the coupon is only discounting the first item.  It should be discounting $15 for each item in the cart.  Screenshot below

I just spent an hour on the phone with 2 people from Square Support and their manager. What a waste of time. The manager just told me that the "Product Team" made the decision for "coupons" to function the way "they" want them to and not the way their customers want them to. "Oh, it impacts your business? Sorry - this is the way it's going to work from now on so just suck it up." What a sorry way to run a business in this day and age.

They made online coupons unusable. We offer our members 10% off certain categories. This worked beautifully before someone without any user knowledge decided they knew better. For example, if you purchase multiple tickets for an event, you only get 10% off the first one. What genius at Square dreamed that one up? After 6 years using Square, I guess we're not important enough. So we're shopping for an alternative company that actually cares about their customers. What alternative systems do members of the Sellers Community recommend?

Looks like it's a bug. We'll see if Square support team weighs in on this. If not, a formal ticket will need to be submitted to them.

*** UPDATE *** this is not a bug, it is 'new functionality'.

Thanks for raising the issue with Square Support, definitely a design flaw/bug.  Can you still use Square Online Coupons?  I thought Square Marketing is the only option now? I did see automatic discounts, but wanted to use a code for a specific item in the cart.

My understanding from Support is any existing Online Coupons that aren't expired can still be used..but you can't create a new Coupon from Online and are forced to use Marketing with its new features that limit coupon efficacy.

Yup. They fully acknowledge the reduced functionality and "hope to have improvements in the future".

Having the same issue. Only applies to the first item in the cart. Tried "entire order" "category" and  "specific item" all three yield the same result.

Further more, we have a items that have 30 variations. The old coupons would good for all variations of the product. Now we have to manually add each variation (takes forever) and it still only registers the first one in someones cart, ignores the others. We have manually been processing refunds (which costs us money since square keeps the processing fees). Please square bring back the original coupon functionality.

Percentage discounts are not working properly in Square online and it needs to be fixed quickly. I have used this feature for years! if you apply different items or multiples of the same item the amount discounted stays the same even though it is a percentage discount. The amount should change since it is a percentage discount. This should not be an issue but it is. I am getting tired of all of the constant updates and I don't feel like the updates are well thought out.

As far as Square is concerned, this is an 'improved feature' and is not being treated as a bug or error. Everyone on this thread feels the change is trash and has made online coupons almost unusable. I formally submitted a complaint to the Square Marketing Team about this and I encourage other users to do the same because I haven't seen a single Square rep reply on this thread yet. The only way to get this changed is to push on them directly...otherwise they will just keep doing what they're doing and have Online discounts work totally different than how they work in Square POS (which makes zero sense).

This was another example of Square making changes without consulting end users. Coupons are totally unusable for us now. I spent an hour on the phone with "Support" and was basically told to suck it up. I've never dealt with a development team that refuses to consider user input.

I am having this same issue. I tried to create a coupon for a category in my shop, and only one item in the cart gets discounted. This cost me extra credit card fees, as clients were placing multiple orders for single items. This new iteration of square coupons makes no sense, and I really hope it will be changed back to the older version.

I agree this is impacting our business terribly especially around the holiday season. Not sure why it is taking so long for Square to revert couponing. We've had it in the past so know it can be done.

This is so dumb. I had a customer email me today that my coupon wasn't working and I discovered this new 'feature.' So ridiculous. This minimizes savings for customers and maximizes the amount of effort I have to put in to offer my customers a sale. At this point, I'm going to have to manually put together an order for my customer with the correct discounting and email them an invoice which totally defeats the purpose of the online store. It'd be one thing if this was just the 'default' functionality but not giving us a way to work around that functionality is stupid.

Also, I second the frustration with not being able to edit a coupon once it's been created. What purpose does that serve?
