Is there a way to do a partial shipment on an invoice and show backordered items?

I have customers that place orders but not all the items are in stock. I want to show all the items on the invoice but only charge them for those I am shipping and show the rest of them as being on backorder. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it? Right now I am showing a zero quantity for the items on backorder and customizing a note for each item to show the quantity on backorder...but this is cumbersome.
