How can I manage tax exempt purchases or set up a customer as tax exempt?

We have tax (7%) set up as default for every non-food item in our store.  Recently, we had someone bring in a Tax Exempt Certificate.  Is there a simple way to turn the tax off for an entire order?  The poor cashier had to disable the tax for each item one at a time.

We currently have the settings button (the three lines in the bottom left corner) locked down because many of our cashiers are volunteers and we would prefer to not allow access to any of these settings.  Only the manager can bypass this security measure, but the manager is not always close by.

@MayaP I hope someone. Is paying attention to the above answer from user @Candlestore above. Can you see how convoluted of a process Sellers have to use to get transaction data that could be solved with one data field in the Customer profiles?

This is the same exact thing that has been requested by Sellers dating back to the beginning of this thread in 2016.

Thanks for the follow-up @autoparts that is entirely too much work, you are right! I move this entire thread to the Ideate Board, our new process of tracking feature requests. That way the Product Team can see how long this request has been here.  Again so sorry for this taking so long to implement. If anything changes we will make sure to update this thread. Thank you so much for hanging in there while we work to get this fixed! Please reach out if you need anything else.

@MayaP I am so glad this is getting reviewed.

Thank you @Michael80, @Candlestore, @autoparts  for being diligent on pushing this problem

@Candlestore  your workaround for helping to create tax exempt reports is spot on.  we currently have "tax exempt resale" "nonprofit tax exempt" items with no dollar value to help organize.

a simple question (drop down) for why you are toggling off tax (ie what category this should fall in will help lessen the chance of tax being toggled off accidently if they do not put a password protection on the toggle and help those of us that need to specify why no tax)  All of my staff have the ability to remove tax to accommodate their clients needs... asking them to verify their password will hopefully eliminate the accidental removal.

thank you again

We have the same issue. In addition to the general public, we sell to local government, schools and churches which are all tax exempt. In our former POS all we did was assign a sales tax code with a 0% sales tax and whenever a sale was made to these accounts and tax was not charged.

The ability to tag certain accounts tax exempt should be a basic function.

I see this was first brought up in 2016. Can we get a projection when this is going to happen?

We have an 8% tax on most items.  When I turn off the tax for exempt customers (rare, but happens), it shows Tax (OFF), but doesn't change the price for the customer.  What am I doing wrong?

@AbbottsGreece ;

You say you turn tax off but it does not change the Price.  Where are you turning the Tax off at on the item itself or on the Checkout tab?

Also you said that after turning the Tax off the Price did not change.  Also Do you have the Tax included in your Price or added on?

I have my sales tax as added to the price.

I ring up the sale and can slide Tax to Off.

The Price of the Item does not change but the total being charged drops by the Tax amount

Tax OnTax On

Tax is on and the Charge amount is $22.25

On the above screen you Tap and Drag to turn Tax Off (Shown in Red)

Tax OffTax Off

The above picture Shows Tax OFF and the Item price did not change but the Charge amount has dropped to the price of my Item of $20.99.

These picture were taken from my Square Stand (Ipad) not sure which device you are using.

The other thing I have is a Barcode at my register Linked to an Item called Wholesale with Tax ff, I can scan that and enter the total amount of the sale, downside is it does not remove items I sold from inventory.  For me this is not an issue since I usually make to order for wholesale orders.

Hope this helps

Please add this feature! We need to be able to mark a customer as sales tax exempt so that square can track those transactions and so we don’t have to manually remove tax. We sell to quite a few non-profits and this would be so helpful! And add the ability to attach a tax exempt doc to the customer profile so the record is kept within square pos

Following this thread, as I would like to sell wholesale online. It wouldn't be a problem in person, I can see how one could turn off the sales tax, but I need an automatic system for online sales to wholesale.

I have figured out the solution!!! I created a 2nd "Sales Tax", named it "EIN "and put in 0%. I did have to set it up on my laptop and then turn off and restart my iPad. At checkout, you then just need to click on "Tax" (you will see "2 applied" off to the right) and then unclick the tax for your state. You do have to do this for each item but at least its fast. Hope this helps everyone out.

Brilliant! Thanks @PaintedSealed
