How can I manage tax exempt purchases or set up a customer as tax exempt?

We have tax (7%) set up as default for every non-food item in our store.  Recently, we had someone bring in a Tax Exempt Certificate.  Is there a simple way to turn the tax off for an entire order?  The poor cashier had to disable the tax for each item one at a time.

We currently have the settings button (the three lines in the bottom left corner) locked down because many of our cashiers are volunteers and we would prefer to not allow access to any of these settings.  Only the manager can bypass this security measure, but the manager is not always close by.

I was trying to learn the same thing.  I like my Square site but was told that Shopify does have this capacity for remembering tax-exempt customers.  I'll be checking into it...

Thanks for adding your voice here on the Seller Community, @RainbowQuest! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

It's amazing that in 4 years no progress. ERM_TS post was from 2016. I love the software bought the new register and hardware and I may have to stay with shopkeep now. We have a large number of tax exempt customers and it's too difficult to ask secretaries to remember or ask every customer if they are tax exempt. Competitors allow you to save this under the customer so when you bring up the customer it automatically removes the sale tax. If I'm mistaken please share with me how I can do this with square.

Thanks @Joe Joe.  Now, are you a representative for Square?  If so, I guess my question would be 'why doesn't square care if it loses business due to the tax-exemption' limitations?  It's sounding more and more that Shopify is doing what Square users have been clamoring for, so for my company switching over is going to happen as much as I like my square store!

To add to the chorus asking for some sort of tax-exempt customer option, simply taking away the tax at point of sale has not always been adequate. We've twice now had government institutions tell us that their statements indicated a portion of our charge was tax, when all we did was input the total, without any tax items applied. This causes problems for them and requires them to ask us for a refund and an alternate form of payment.

@Mr-Mulch I'm amazed that Square has not being doing anything since @ERM_TS started this post back in 2016. We're now in 2021 and still no resolution from Square. Not what I expected from such a company. Until this is resolve, I will not recommend my clients to use Square payment from now on. Such a let down!

A large amount of my customer base are tax-exempt. It would be really nice if their customer profile could be set to automatically not charge tax on their orders so I don't have to manually go in and remove the taxes. Or my VIP customers that automatically get 10% off, if I could have a setting on their profile to ensure their discount is always applied.

I have seen some discussion that there are sellers here who have wholesale customers & retail customers. This idea could work for them. If wholesale always get 25% off (for example) then have a discount applied to that customer profile so any orders attached automatically get 25% off...

It seems a little crazy that the option to indicate a customer is tax exempt is not available.  It seems like it would be something fairly easy to do, but I'm not a technical expert.  Why is this option not available yet?

My organization would really love this feature too.

We need tax exemption for certain customers hope square adds this feature.  Thank you
