Appointments Feature Request: Disable tipping on items - calculate tip based on cost of service(s)

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Tips should only be calculated on the service part of a sale, not retail

We are a service based business. We provide a service and our customers tip us on that service. But we also sell retail (skincare, lifestyle) items that customers should not tip on.

When our customer comes in for a 90min facial and during check out decides to buy some recommended products also their balance can jump form $130 to $280 very easily. So we now have a $280 balance with services and products, the customer swipes their card and the tip screen suggests a few % options..

Scenario 1, Wrong - 20% tip on total sale

$280 + 20% ($56) gratuity = $336

Scenario 2, Correct - 20% tip on Service only

$130 service + 20% ($26) service gratuity = $156 + $150 retail = $306

Unless we ring an extra transaction to separate retail from service sales, our customer gets ripped off. We make more money, Square makes more money but our customer got ripped off by $30 in Scenario 1.

The solution we previously offered to Square was to let items be "tip(able)" the same way items are currently "tax(able)"

Any thoughts from the Square team?

I encounter this issue AT LEAST SEVERAL TIMES A DAY having to check a client/customer out TWICE. It's a huge time-waster for everyone and takes away the from my guests experience. I'm actually considering dropping Square altogether due to this missing feature and major inconvenience.

Square: PLEASE add a toggle for "tippable/non-tippable" in the items menu settings.

Thanks for checking in and sharing your experience here, @Zena. We would hate to see you leave for lack of this feature. I don't have any updates or workarounds that I can offer right now, but I've shared your post with our Point of Sale team. I will circle back to this thread as soon as any other details come to light.

@Tom

Definitely a HUGE need! +1000 to get this added - which I agree with the others. Adding a toggle for tippable or not should be fairly easy to get done... Right? 🙂

@TomI don’t believe adding a toggle system like the taxable option would be difficult to implement for tips. It is obviously a matter of Square not wanting to do it, since this has been an issue for a few years!

Looking at other Point of Sales option other than Square might be simpler since they obviously don’t care what Merchants in the tipping industry wish for. We probably don’t account for their biggest accounts. Otherwise this issue wouldn’t be an issue any longer. Simply RIDICULOUS

This is really a very important thing! Why can’t square do something about this ASAP? This thread goes back a couple years. Please Square do something about this!!?

I see you said there have been updates on tipping on services only. Can you share what that update is?

Hey @Hairdr126,

Very sorry for the frustration and confusion. I went to check on any updates on this request, but there isn't any news that I can access and share out. For now, hopefully EJ's suggested workaround on the first page of this thread helps. I can certainly see how automating this part of the tipping process would help streamline your customer's experience. We will circle back as soon as any other developments become available.

Is there an update here? Read through the thread and it looks like sellers have been requesting this for two YEARS. Why does it take so long to get something so simple implemented? This is a huge issue for my busniness. This is something I wish I had known before committing to using square for my business.

Hey @BlushTanWoo - Thank you for sharing your feedback here for our Point of Sale team to track. We don't have any updates regarding this feature, but you can read more about what brings a feature request to life in the meantime.

Square- this needs to be addressed. The ability to toggle a percentage on or off you’ve already programmed for tax, so we know the ability is there.

The ONLY reason that I can conceive of that you will not address this is that the processing fees on the percentage of sales that many of us will toggle to “off” will be lost. This is not acceptable and is a questionable business decision ethically. I am not only a customer but also a share holder in Square. I believe in your awesome operating system and technology, but am continually reminded with each seller replying of how discouraged I am that you are not addressing this recurrent request. Running two transactions is punishment to a small business- I have no time to do this. Also, it looks unprofessional and amateur to a client, as well as taking up more of their time. Please reconsider pushing this aside another year.
