Label Printing: Scan and Print Barcode Labels

Label Printing: Scan and Print Barcode Labels

We are a retailer that has over 6,000 SKUs. We have asked for some time if there is an option that can be incorporated into the POS that would allow for us to "Scan and Print". With tons of new items coming in every week, we would love a better option to print out shelf labels, with the easiest option being to scan the new item and print immediately.

THANKS!

Re: Can Square generate SKU numbers?

Hello @GlacierLandings, welcome to the Seller Community!

This is a great question I'm sure other businesses have. While Square doesn't have a way to auto generate SKU's Shopventory does! Once your products are entered into Shopventory you can run a task where the software will generate a SKU for any item without an assigned SKU.

I hope this helps!

Hi @thebottleshoppe! Thanks for reaching out and thanks for starting this thread. I love this feature request and will begin tracking it here. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

Not sure why this is marked as the best answer. It is not even a correct answer to the question.  I can't see any way to have Square Retail actually generate bar codes. Looks like i'm off to find some external application to do that.

Hey @dewey320!

I unmarked it as the best answer, however, it did include a link that is entitled Create and Print Barcode Labels with Square for Retail. It provides the following instructions for generating barcodes:

Before starting, please make sure all of your items have a SKU number. If there is no SKU number, the barcodes will not generate:

  1. Sign in to the Items section of your online Square Dashboard > Actions.

  2. Click Print Labels.

  3. Select a label type and location.

  4. Choose to print labels by CategoryPurchase Order, or Product.

  5. Click Create > download or print labels.

  6. Click Done.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions about this!

Hi Isabelle, i'm not trying to be impolite here, I'm just not sure you understood the question.

Users, myself included, are wanting to know about the capability to generate the unique sku codes that in turn are used to print bar codes on labels.

We're not asking about how to print labels which is the answer you've provided.

Other providers have this functionality and square currently does not. It would be helpful to know if the addition of this functionality is planned and if it is when we might expect it to be implemented.

Hi @dewey320- Jumping in for Isabelle today. I see what you're saying now. Sorry for the confusion, sometimes it's tough to decipher the question through written communication.

But yes, it looks like you're aware that the ability to auto generate a unique SKU is still a feature request.

This has been a feature request for us for at least 3 years! How can this not be created by now? Honestly we would much rather switch back to square to run our small business but can't until that is a reality feature.

Wondering the same....

Welcome to the Seller Community @XOandMane! The best answer of this thread still applies. We don't have a way to auto generate SKUs, but you can always scan in a SKU when creating an item (if it has one assigned) or create your own by typing it in. You can also check any of our App Partners to see if they have inventory solutions that better fit your needs.

I don't think any of us have time to use a separate program to manage our SKU's. When I researched switching from quickbooks to square, I was assured by multiple people from square that I would still have that capability. What a huge disappointment and huge waste of time to have to figure this out myself. Square should auto generate the sku #. Going back through threads, people have been wanting this feature for a very long time. Should be top of the priority list to build this feature in, especially for $60/month subscriptions.

We have had 1-2 retail stores with square for 8 years now and would like to start using a barcode scanner, but our items don't have any SKU's so far. The library is so large at this point it would take weeks and additional staff to create SKU numbers for each item. Please make this a feature soon to auto-generate SKU numbers! 🙂
