Is there a way to change an uncategorized item to a category after the sale transaction?

I need to change an item that was sold as uncategorized to a category. How can I do that?

Re: Categories

@ruckdmc At this time there isn't a way to go back and change or add a category to a past sale.

In the meantime, you can add your items to categories so that your reports will be accurate in future. After you create a category > go to the Items section of your Dashboard > click on an item > click Category to select your new category.

I'd also like to be able to use this feature to recategorize items into renamed categories. I recently renamed a couple of categories to make sense of an expanded offering, and now I have two very similar but separate categories listed in my reports.

How about Now? 🙂

Are there any plans for this feature?  Or perhaps you could create an alternate category field for remapping?

So one of my biggest issues with square is that I end up with a fair amount of "Uncategorized" Sales and they can not be changed.  All of my Items are always Categorized, but square forces us to allow anyone with "Checkout" privilege's, to be able to "Manually enter custom amounts", which always show up as "Uncategorized".  What is the point of having reporting, and categories if you give any cashier the ability to throw off our reporting for the year with a single transaction?

My fix was:

  1. Download the CSV file from Dashboard>Transactions>2020 into a MS Spreadsheet
  2. Delete all irrelevant columns
  3. Click 'Sort and Filter' button at top, then on the 'Category' column, correct any erroneous assignments
  4. Print out the resulting pages after each 'Sort and Filter' command (after having made your corrections
  5. Use these pages for reporting your income

Keep in mind all the implications related to Gross Sales, Net Sales, and Square's 1099-K.

I’ve seen several threads that talk about changing the category of custom sales after the fact. Honestly, it doesn’t seem like it would be too complicated to add the category field on the same screen that pops up if you tap the custom sales amount prior to check out.

Enter custom amount, Tap it, Select Category, enter any notes( which already exists) and save and checkout. Done. This is such a useful use case for things like garage sales or consignment shops.

You can’t possible create a button for every time in every persons name, but if you could create category’s for each person selling things, then you could enter the amount, categorize it to them, and be on your way. This way you don’t need to create buttons for everything, and a person could buy things from different sellers and easily see who is owed what.

That way at least you can categories things from the beginning instead of scanning though notes and such trying to figure out what it was for.

Please add me to the list of people who REALLY want this.  Keep in mind for every 1 of us that take the time to make the request you have a 1000 that don't bother or don't have the time, but are just as frustrated by it.

Absolutely agree!

Almost 5 years since the initial request, and still an issue.  I just started my business in December, an art gallery based on consignment, and utilize the categories to report individual artist sales and ensure they are getting paid everything they are due, as well as tracking revenue for 1099's.  I often have to add new items on the fly, as our prices are negotiable, and occasionally categories are missed.  Not being able to adjust this after the sale is ridiculous.  They are categories we create, we should be able to regroup the items sold afterwords for reporting purposes.

Would love this feature, as I too am struggling with this issue.

I have this same issue. There should be a way. If enough people ask for it, then the programmers will make this change. It's a pretty important request, from my point of view, anyway.
