Is there a way to change an uncategorized item to a category after the sale transaction?

I need to change an item that was sold as uncategorized to a category. How can I do that?

Re: Categories

@ruckdmc At this time there isn't a way to go back and change or add a category to a past sale.

In the meantime, you can add your items to categories so that your reports will be accurate in future. After you create a category > go to the Items section of your Dashboard > click on an item > click Category to select your new category.

This isn't a realistic or acceptable answer for my business. Adding each item to categories (I make jewelry and most pieces are one off originals). And this does not address the issue of an employee assigning a sale to the wrong category. I do not understand why this isn't on the list of features as I actually see it as a bug fix.  All accounting systems allow you to change a transaction after its been posted on a limited basis aka changing memo or category but of course not the amount.

I have been using square for over 4 years and love having historical data but am now looking at other software/platforms.  Since the historical data becomes invalid the minute the employee makes a mistake and yes when there are a lot of people in the shop and they get flustered they make mistakes. PLEASE fix this. I don't want to go, but looking like I'll have to.

Just really silly this isn't a priority.

So how about creating a feature that lets us manually move the dollars to the right category based on our user/owner/admin status.

For example:

Items Sold Necklace $22

Should have been a bracelet As a part of end of day or individual transaction, let us do a

Items sold necklace - $22
Items sold bracelet + $22

Net difference zero

This type of transaction also known as a journal entry would have to balance out to zero or you couldn't save it. Would allow us to recategorize dollar amounts to the correct category and not touch any of the credit card transactions.

And really does anyone want to loose their historical sales data?  I think not.

Again, I'm a long time square customer that loves everything about square except this and it's making me look at other platforms.  After all if my reports aren't accurate, what value is there really in sticking with the system for my historical data.

I used to own a tech company and I have accounting background so I do understand the complexity of retroactively editing transactions which is why the journal entry option would be a better way to solve the problem and keep an audit trail.  But not addressing the issue it a mistake in the long run. IMO.

Please tell me this is something that is being worked on now.

Thanks,

This issue has been raised for the past 3 years without it being resolved.

😊 We're pretty far into the future. It's 2020. Is this still not possible?

Want to put my name down on this feature as well. It's incredible that after all these years, such a large company hasn't been able to assign any Developer time to scope this out and get it done! You're dealing with Databases that should be editable after the fact, this is simply a single column in the database that should be easily editable without changing anything else in the database or affecting other portions.

I'd be very keen to hear what your Developers are telling you is the reason they can't implement this?

Along the way businesses NEED to be able to change their reporting and how things are categorised, sometimes things are added in with a category that need to be changed later on.

DITTO! IT's been FOUR years since this thread has started and no change? Come on!!!!!

Add us to the ever growing list of people who are rethinking Square since the reports are useless because of the lack of ability to recategorize or itemize a transaction !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I worked it IT for many years,  There is a simple solution.  Don't change the completed order data, but do allow reports to be run using either the attributes copied to the order and the time it was placed or with the attributes that currently exist for the items.  Fix the data, run the report.

I'd like this feature as well. Our coffeeshop baristas occasionally can't find a new item (or we haven't created one yet), so they enter the price as a custom amount to get the sale done quickly for the customer. I want to be able to edit those to assign them to the right item/category after the fact.
