Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

Re: How do I restrict all discounts on purchases of alcohol?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.

  1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.

  2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:

  3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:

  4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

Please let us know if this isn't quite what you were looking to do, and we can dig in a bit more

Hi @salon208 — welcome to the seller community! ✌🏻

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

I'll be sharing your suggestion with our Product Liaison team, who is constantly working to improve our products based on seller feedback. We'll certainly circle back with any other developments that may be useful.

Please keep in touch for updates and if you have any other questions, let us know!

One idea here I heard from another Square that may be helpful to the original question: we cannot prevent the discount from applying to certain items, but we can restrict discounts to certain users. The idea would be that  only managers can apply the employee discount to make sure it is applied to the correct products:

Example:

  1. Create a discount called "Employee Discount"
  2. In Items > Discounts, set the discount so that it requries an employee PIN
  3. In Employees > Roles, Grant the manager "restricted discounts" permissions, but not other roles

Result: only the manager's PIN will work for "passcode required" discounts

Items > Discounts, Passcode RequiredItems > Discounts, Passcode Required

Employees > Edit Role, Make a selection for "Apply Restricted Discounts and Comps"Employees > Edit Role, Make a selection for "Apply Restricted Discounts and Comps"

Thanks for sharing your tip with the rest of the Community, @elaine_p! I'm sure this could help other Sellers on here. 🤙🏼

This is a feature that i am very interested in as well. I'd like to be able to offer discounts on specific items only.  The option to be able to limit discounts to first time bookings or purchases  would be an amazing feature as well.

Thank you @renewed!

We need to be able to offer a discount online that only applies to specific items. I want to be able to run a 30% discount for only a few items not my all my items.

Good luck.  Square doesn't seem to think this is a necessary feature.  We've been clamoring for years.

You can use a third party API that literally one guy designed very quickly.  It's not ideal, but apparently, it works (I have not tried): https://priceman.herokuapp.com/

Hi @ShayMaze

Thanks for sharing the need - I'm a Product Manager and it is helpful to know as we prioritize what we need to build.

A few questions for you - would you want the discount to apply automatically if an item was on sale, or would you want the customer to ask for the discount to be applied?

When you say you're offering it online, do you mean you will advertise it online and use the Square POS to apply it?

Assuming that is the case, here's an example of how to remove a discount if you don't want it to apply to everything in a cart:

We're using your feedback to shape what's necessary, so thank you for sharing again (and for talking with me more in depth about it @sciabica1936).

I’m talking about the online store. I want to offer a discount code. Example, I’m running a Black Friday sale, a package deal on Massage and facial services. Also a 30% off retail. I want my customers to be able to buy online. I do NOT want the 30% off to be applied to the Massage and facial treatments. But I do want the discount code to be applied to the retail products.

One way to accomplish this would be to set your online location as separate from your retail location. Then you can go to your items > select the retail item you want to discount online > click "Edit per Location" and set a price override for the discounted amount.

A drawback of this approach if you are tracking inventory is that you will need to allocate inventory between your retail and online locations.

You will also need to go remove the price override when you are ready to end the promotion.
