Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. Please, please.  The visual of a picture is so important when looking for things.  Since it's already available for items, I'm not sure why category pictures is so difficult.  I can't even change the colors.  The navigation bar you refer to is no where on my screen.  Who wants to stare at boring grey all day?

You can change the color of the category icon if you edit it on the app.  You can't set the color from the Dashboard.  I think the Navigation bar is the tabs at the bottom of the grid page on the tablet version of the app.  What device are you using?

Hi @Machiventa - Right now you can add emojis as category pictures on Square Stand and POS. Not sure how helpful this is for you, but wanted to put it out there. I'll be sharing your feedback with our team, but can you explain a bit more about your use case for pictures as categories?

Hi @katieand, thank you for your reply.

In my particular case I would add pictures of the products we manufacture to differentiate categories from each other, because the names get cut off on the Item Grid.

In our case we manufacture a brand called Elementé, and then add the appropriate name for each category. So it's essentially something like this: Elementé Face Care, Elementé Mineral Makeup, Elementé Essential Oils, etc. And on the Item Grid all you see is "Elementé..." - so we have 5 different Elementé categories and we can't tell one from another except for changing the 2 letters and background color for each category. I would rather have a photo for each category instead, just like we can do for individual items.

Oh, and I don't see how to add emojis, only how to change the label letters and label color.

If you go to the category tile and click to edit the letters, you can put emojis in from your keyboard. 👍

Hello @hartleywell, we're still tracking this thread, but this feature is not available yet. 

Right now you can add emoji's to category tiles and that's the best workaround we have to offer an image. I know it's limited by the emoji keyboard, but some sellers have welcomed the update.

I'd like to know who the sellers are that like emoji's. 2 years and counting for something that would really help identify what categories are. Come on Square, I know you can do much better then this!

I, like many of you, am baffled that Square hasn't been able to add this simple feature after more than a year with many, many requests. I just called to check on the status of this feature and was told it hasn't been decided yet if it will be added to the queue for development. If you would find this feature useful, I urge you to both comment here and call customer service to make your opinion known so that it becomes enough of a priority for Square to actually do something about.
