Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Can you apply pictures for categories?

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

Re: Pictures for Categories

Hello @ryanwnzl

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. All of you who have commented are already subscribed, and anyone new to the thread can click the "Subscribe" link on the first page.

It's truly hard to believe that making this change is difficult or time consuming, considering you already do it at the item level. As other people have pointed out, assigning colors to Category buttons is useless in a restaurant setting, as is only seeing the first two letters of the category name. We would really appreciate a meaningful answer regarding why this hasn't been implemented vs the standard and hollow response of it not being on the development timeline.

i need the same feature to my bunnies by adding pictures to categories

The following URL shows a category with an image but not how to do it.

I will add my request for this feature to this list.

Than you @finoff! The post you shared a link to shows how to add a color background and an emoji to a category - when you're running the Point of Sale app on an iPad or an Android tablet. I'm sorry for the disappointment!

We need to be able to add an image to categories.

Hey @PawsitivelyCozy! Welcome to the Community.

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you have some more feedback for us about how this would benefit your business before we pass it along to the Product team?

I have categories of items that can not be differentiated between though emoji's alone. We can add our own images to items, so why not categories? It's very frustrating that this has been suggested on the forums since 2016. I will likely be moving to another platform if certain issues such as this continue to be put on the back burner/ignored.

Yes this would be very handy for quick and easy visual use of the chack out.

More specifically, any item that can be a button on the POS register needs to have a customizable image. For example, discounts, also categories, as this user has requested.

Checking in thought I was missing something since it's simple to add pictures for items, I thought I was missing something for categories. Cannot believe this is not a feature. It's almost 2020 now
