I recently changed from an android to iPhone.
Using Square Register on an android at the top of the items list you can select the category. It then shows only items within that category.
On iphone it only has a search option at the top and lists all items. Is there a setting I'm missing? I figured Square would work better with ios. Otherwise I have to rename all my items to make them easier to find - wow that would be a major job and throw off my reports.
If I haven't somehow overlooked this, please please please add this to ios. It's a major deal for me. Thank you

Hello everyone.
At this time, the ability filter items by category when adding an item to a sale isn’t available on an iPhone. This feature is exclusive to iPads and Android devices.
While I don't have an exact timeline, we are currently working to bring this feature to all supported devices, so keep an eye out for updates to the app and hopefully we can get it out for you in the near future.
I also have been wondering about this (And how has it been 5 years?!) But it *looks like* there's been an update! I just went into my Square app on my iPhone and they've rearranged the entire app for easier interface.
When clicking the "Checkout" button at the bottom, it now gives you 3 options - 1st is Keypad, for entering in a dollar amount, 2nd is Library (this is where all your Categories are!!!!) and 3rd is Favorites, where you can keep certain items tagged as a favorite.
It seems like our wishes have been granted!

Have you guys worked on allowing categories on iPhones? We run a small gallery and everything is organized by item name. I don't have an iPad, but we borrowed one during the Christmas season. It's easy for us to keep track of inventory per artist. Can you guys please push this out for iPhones?

No updates at this time, @tthomasarts. It's definitely a popular request but we'll keep sharing the feedback with our product teams. We'll also update this thread if anything changes. Thanks again.

I too would love this ability. I sell tickets to events at multiple locations and use categories to sort by venue. We use an iPad at one venue and it works perfectly but we use iPhones at others and it's a mess 😕

Any word? Iphone users have been waiting for this feature for years. It sort of feels like a "GET IT TOGETHER" moment.
It's not like you don't have the resources to make this happen, so we're all just kind of wondering why. Can you tell us why this is taking so long? An honest real answer is more helpful than, "we're working on it" because that answer rings really false at this point.

This reply was created from merging an existing thread: Can't search by category in cart using iPhone
When adding items to the cart using the iPhone app, it is not possible to filter the items by category with a drop down list as they do on Android devices.
This is absolutely frustrating and making the experience with Square less satisfying.
If you have hundreds of items, you have to either scroll through them or start typing which takes forever when customers buy many things.
You can improve this workflow by categorizing items and filtering them out before making a selection for the cart.
Please implement this feature! The issue has apparently been around for years, and myself being a developer this is a bit of a show stopper. This has been a deal breaker for many of my other colleagues who don't use android devices.
Prioritizing this item will make many happy customers on iPhones!!!

@Chris113 I'm really sorry for the frustration this is causing and for time it's adding for you at checkout. I have good news though, I checked in with the product team and they are working on this filter for iPhones!
We can't share timelines in the Community but as soon as we have any updates we'll post in this thread so that everyone interested in this is notified. (I've merged your post to this thread to so you're also notified.)
Thanks for your continued patience and for posting to share how this will help you an your colleagues.

It's been four years how's this coming along. Can we use category view on iphones yet?

I agree I put in a sku number but if you search you can't find it (so whats the point in having it if you can't search for it)

I came searching to see why categories were not available on my iPhone. Now I know. Quite disappointing.
I work off of two different price lists so the work around I have come up with is a numbering system in the in the item name.
So one price list is the 100's- 300's and the other will begin at the 400's so for instance a Retainer fee for portraits is listed as "101- Creative Fee/Retainer" whereas an unlimited edition print for my fine art work will be titled "401- 8"x12" Unlimited/Unframed Edition Print".
This at least helps me scroll through and find things more quickly. Hope this helps others in the mean time.

Another vote for this. Seems insane this has not been addressed yet based on the age of this thread. I was attempting to switch from using variants to categories since I can't use search within variants (another frustrating lacking feature). But not being able to sort by category defeats that intention altogether.

Why on earth hasn't this issue been resolved yet?!?!?! This is completely ridiculous! We sell at various venues with a different subset of our items each time. I want the ability to track over the year, so don't want to remove and re add them all the time, and scrolling through the whole list is impossible at our speed of business. I've been happily using the categories on my android, but my business partner is iphone - I'm seriously shocked she can't use this feature. Alternatively, give us the option to manually sort the item list instead of defaulting to alpha.

At this point 2 years after the initial request and the Admin no longer even posting patronsizing "it's on the list" replies, I'm assuming this feature will never arrrive.
I'm tired of seeing app aesthetic-only redesigns in the updates, when basic, essential functonality still lacks. Quit wasting time on making it look different. Make it work properly.
The only reason I stick with Square at this point is that the software for the competitors also has equally silly missing features (last time I checked).
Square's silence and inaction on this and countless other requests speaks volumes. My customer loyalty factor went down to zero after switching, and seeing none of the requests honored — after now 2 years of promisies.
I'd have been a Square fan otherwise. Now, I'll gladly switch when I find an alternative that listens to and respects the needs of their customers.
This is a pretty core functionality request, not some niche use-case thing. It's beyond stupid that this isn't addressed yet and it is just making your users frustrated and with a bad impression of Square and it's attitude towards their customers in general.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this @Whimsy and @georgec
I completely understand the frustration and disappointment here, and unfortunately this isn't something that's been prioritized on our immediate road map.
We make sure the feedback you provide within the Community gets brought up to the appropriate team and try to advocate as much as possible for feature requests that you make, so hopefully we can move the needle with more interest in the near future.
@georgec While we'd hate to see you go, if this is a deal breaker for you I would understand, as you have to do what's best for your business.
Keep an eye on this thread and hopefully you open it back up to good news soon.

This isn't a deal-breaker in itself. It's like a "death by a thousand paper cuts", with this and all the other things that I've requested or seen asked for on the forums.
I don't think I've ever seen the app get updated with anything significant since I became a customer.
I'd love to see this feature road map, so we know what's got actual priority here.
The cumulative result is that it sends the message that Square has priorities other than their POS customers. I guess the retail customers get the focus, because I'm not seeing functionality increase in the POS app. But it keeps getting facelifts, which to me are a waste of time. I'll take ugly-plus-increased-functionality any day.
Pehaps there is a list of all the fixed and added features somewhere to help allay my growing dissatisfaction with Square?
I keep seeing new nice-to-have-for-some features added, but the core things that I need to do are continuously overlooked. And after months and years, no less. Especially when they already exist on other platforms.
Every time I use the app at an event, I get frustrated all over again at things that are so basic, fundamental and obvious it makes me wonder about the wisdom level of those at the helm. It feels like they are hopelessly out of touch with how their users actually use the app.
