Do I need a Tax ID or EIN to use Square for business?

The title of this thread was updated from its original title: “New to square , need assistance”.

I recently decided to go with square instead of just accepting cash and checks. My business is services rendered not a storefront or a company with an inventory. I have yet to register my business yet . To accept payments without a problem to be transfered to my bank account , would I be required to have a business tax  ID, ein number , ect. Or would I just be able to charge a payment to go directly into my personal bank account untill I get sufficient funds to organize my business professionally .

Thanks for all of your help and time .

Hey everyone! 🌸

You do not need a Tax ID or EIN to create an account with Square. However, you will need to enter an SSN to create the account.

Hey there @AllWashedUp - welcome to Square! 🎉

@VanKalkerFarms is right, you can use Square for your business without using an EIN. Since you are new to Square, make sure to check out our Get Started Guide

This reply was created from merging an existing thread: Tax EIN

Should I get a tax EIN number from my tax preparer and enter it in at a later time? If so how do I enter it in?

Thanks,

@LeeP You can use Square without an EIN. If you do get an EIN at a later date you can add it from your online Square Dashboard:

  1. Sign in to your account at squareup.com/dashboard.
  2. Click Account & Settings > then click Business > Tax Forms.
  3. Click on a location name/your business name to enter your EIN.

If you have any other questions about this reply here!

I have been using square since 2019 occasionally to process credit transactions. During this time sales linked to my bank and did not charge taxes through square. This was set up with my ss #. Now I have purchased Square Register with cash drawer and printer. Should this account be listed with ss# or the fed tax # I have always had. I wanted it listed properly since I now charge taxes for the local rate and is shown on my sales.
