Current domain host provides email - what happens if I transfer my domain to a Square Online Store?

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Using email once domain is transferred to an online Square store

 

I called this evening to inquire about upgrading to a better plan for our new online store. The tech did not sound confident in giving a solid answer, so I am asking here.

Once we upgrade to another plan and transfer our domain to Square, can we still use our email? I cannot find the correct answer and would assume that the new hosting would be through Square's interface and would include the use of a dedicated email.

I appreciate any help.

It sounds like your current domain host is providing an email address domain with the website domain, @Bientro - is that right?

 

If so, I should be able to help clarify! We support the ability to use a custom domain for your website, but we do not provide custom email domains. Some web providers offer a package deal, like your current domain host, while others specialize in either web domains or email domains - and some do both! As an example: if your domain is a house, it’s like if cable is your website and your phone is email.

 

If you want to continue using your email domain, you'll need to continue paying your current host for the email domain, or switch to a different email provider. This could be a different email provider entirely, or you can sign up for Google Workspace for email through us. Our Google Workspace integration will let you create an email address using a domain that you bought through us - or a domain from somewhere else - as long as it’s being used with a website in the account.

 

The one caveat with changing email providers is that there will likely be a period of time where you email doesn’t work, and you may lose whatever saved emails you have. If you have any other questions about this, let me know here, and I'll do what I can to further clarify 😊

I recently transferred my domain to Weebly, but was told that I didn't have to move my hosting/email.  Apparently when the domain transfer was complete, it didn't move all the DSN records (MX records, specifically) which caused us to lose access to our email accounts.

 

I was told to contact my hosting company to find out what my MX records were.  They walked me through it &, after they were updated, I was informed that it would take 4-12 hours for the records to update.  It has now been well over 24 hours, I still have no email access.

 

Customer service on both ends has been horrible.  I have even tried to just sign up for G Suite through Weebly to no avail (it gives me an error code).

I moved your post over to this thread, where someone else had a question about email domains VS website domains. I attempted to clarify here how these two things can sometimes be related to one another, but aren't always - so I'm hoping that this at least provides some understanding into what's happening right now.

When you transfer a domain to "Square" they just add an "A" record in the DNS settings to match a "Square" server. 

 

The place you register your domain will offer "hosting" in this case email hosting.  Cpanel is the cheapest and can be secured (although many will say different so they can up sale you, our owner owns over 600 domains, and has been using Cpanel for emails for years now).  GoDaddy offers Cpanel for $1.99/month.  

 

Yes, MX records are your email, you shouldn't have lost emails, unless someone had change it.  Look at your DNS, its also a good idea to have a backup MX server, incase one does go down, just make sure to create another MX record, change 0 to higher number.  Email will go to the lowest number first

Thank you. Yes, I finally got is straight. I was hoping to move everything over to Square/Weebly. But, I will leave my old host so that I can keep our email account.

Thanks! I have left my DNS with my original hosting company. It would be great if Square/Weebly would host accounts so that we could keep everything with one company. Maybe one day?

This reply was created from merging an existing thread: How to send and receive mail.

 

I am set up to use Square for my online scheduling and taking payment for services. I would like to use my custom domain for email too. How do I send and receive email? I see I can do a campaign for bulk mail, but these messages come from Square, not my domain. I want receive customer correspondence at name@mydomain.com

Hi @jeffraw - I've moved your post over to this thread, as it should help provide some context. It sounds like you're asking if Square offers email domain capabilities with your current Square Online website. I can confirm that your Square Online website does not come with a specialized email domain.

My Weebly eccommerce site came with a custom domain. All I need is access to the DNS of this domain so I can point Google Suite to this record. Specifically I need to add a TXT record to the Domain with specific Google credentials to provide email access.

 

How can I get access to the DNS record that Weebly created? What DNS provider is used?

@jeffraw  - Just an FYI. While you can connect your domain to the Square/Weebly account, you cannot use email. You need to have your email hosted elsewhere. So, for us, we will leave it at PowWeb. Or, you can go to GoDaddy and get their email service for your personal email. I am hoping that one day we can have everything in one account, instead of all over the place. Right now, our domain is at GoDaddy, our email is hosted at PowWeb, and the domain name/ecommerce site is at Square/Weebly.

Hello,

 

I am using square as my online store and Square uses Weebly to facilitate this process.  I am trying to set up my email address using my domain name.  Weebly hosts my domain but I cannot find weebly in the drop down of domain hosts so I have chosen the "other" option.  I keep getting errors when I try to change the MX info provided by google in the MX records section of my weebly account.

 

What am I doing wrong?

I initially bought my domain via Google Sites, and linked it to Square, before the Weebly integration.  Inside the Google Sites system, I had several email addresses attached to my domain name.  Since Square's partnership with Weebly, I allowed my domain to go through Square/Weebly-- but now am being asked to pay $70/year/user for "users" that auto-forward back to the original @GMail.com accounts?  And, in the meantime, my nice info@ contact email address is...  what?  Gone?

Please help?

@AStarDanced I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this! I do have some good news. If you set up email addresses directly through Google with your custom domain then you don’t need to pay us to use them. You should just keep renewing your email through Google.

I need the steps to accomplish this. I am in the same boat as @AStarDanced and I don't know what else to do. I have already tried to reconnect my email through the Google Sites and it says my @Email account i am trying to reconnect already exists and it will not work. Please help.
