Check out TablesReady, an online waitlist management and SMS paging app. (Disclosure, I'm the CEO.) We let you text your customers when their food/order is ready. We launched our Square integration at the beginning of 2018.
Once you've connected your Square account within TablesReady, you take orders as usual in Square. If you add a customer to a transaction with their name and phone number within Square, that data will automatically flow into TablesReady. Then, from within TablesReady, you just click a button to text or call that customer with a message that you've customized (e.g., "Your order is ready, come to the pickup area to get it!"). We recommend you have a separate tablet from your Square POS at your food pickup area that stays open to TablesReady, but you can do it all from one tablet, too.
We've gotten a ton of positive feedback from quick-service restaurants and food trucks since we launched. It makes managing food pickup a lot easier. Plus, you get a lot of detailed wait time analytics that just gets thrown out with old-fashioned buzzers.
If you're looking to upgrade from pagers, handing out order number placards, or just shouting out names, check us out. www.tablesready.com.

We actually find a cleaning way to use the paging system with Square. Here is what we did:
1. Create a menu item in Square called: "Pager" with the price $0.00
2. Add options: 01, 02, ... 20 (we have 20 pagers in our system) to the menu item "Pager".
3. When enter customer order, add this "Pager" item with option 08 (for example), hand the pager number 08 to customer
4. When the order is ready, page 08 pager in the page system.
We used this way for months and it works perfect.
By the same idea, you can add "To Go" menu item too.
