I am about to use the square reader for the first time at a fundraising event. I have successfully connected to them both and made a successful test purchase on each. But I have bought two and I need to understand the practicalities of adding different phones/users as it won't be me taking payments on the day. So please can you answer the following questions.
- Does each user have to download the app to their phone in order to take payments?
- If so, do I have to log them onto the square account, bank account beforehand in order for them to start taking payments?
- Can more than one user be paired to the app (provided they have downloaded the app to their phone)
- If only one user can be paired to the app at a time, then provided the previous user has unpaired, can the new user just go ahead and pair to the app and start taking payments?
- Any other tips you can offer? We are going to have a lot of people wanting to pay at two points over several hours and there will be up to 4 people taking payments during that time.

Hi @sianet, thanks for your post and welcome to the Seller Community 👋
A Reader can only be paired to one device at a time, so if you have multiple Readers, it's best that all team members/employees have their own designated device. You can't have two Readers connected to one phone, as it will cause connection errors. If you are changing users, it's best to fully unpair the Reader from any device before pairing it to a new one.
In this case, yes it's best that you have whoever is accepting payments download the Point of Sale app, (after ensuring their mobile device is compatible).
The set-up options here can vary depending on what you are looking for, if you are not really concerned with tracking which payment is attributed to each individual or device, the easiest option here is to set up a device code which your team can use to log into your account on their own device, without having to use your username/password. This means all of the payments taken on different devices will be grouped together in your account.
If you would like to give everyone their own individual logins to your account and have a breakdown of who took what sale, then you would want to look at setting up team management (you wouldn't need a paid subscription for the set up you are looking for, the free version would suffice here).
I hope I've answered everything, please have a read of the articles attached and then let me know if you have any questions!
