The title of this thread was updated from its original title: “Can't connect new Tap module to iPad 3 via Bluetooth.”
New tap module in discoverable mode (4 flashing orange lights) is not discoverable by iPad 3 (or MB Air, iPhone). This happens both while the module is plugged in and unplugged.

Hi @squamishcoffee - welcome to the 👥 community!
The Contactless + Chip Card reader can be connected to supported Apple and Android phones and tablets (Square Point of Sale and associated hardware is not compatible with other devices like laptop computers at this time).
The Contactless + Chip Card reader connects wirelessly via Bluetooth (Bluetooth LE). Make sure you have updated your device to the latest version of Square Point of Sale before connecting your reader.
To connect your reader:
- Press and release the button on your reader to turn it on.
- Go to your device settings and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
- Open the Square app and tap the three horizontal lines.
- Tap Settings, then tap Card Readers, then tap Connect a Reader (from iOS, tap Contactless + Chip Reader).
- Make sure your reader is in pairing mode by pressing the button on the reader (press for 3-10 seconds, be sure to remove your finger as soon as you see orange flashing lights. If you see red flashing lights, you’ve held the button too long and you’ll need to try again).
When connected, the reader will be listed as Ready in-app.

Hi, am having the same issue but where you say to select "Connect a reader" that option is not present on the menu.
Square app is latest version, android is updated, bluetooth is on.
Device and app recognises the smaller swipe reader ( but we really need the tap and chip reader)
