Hi Everyone,
how do you do exchanges in the point of sale app on an android device? I am also located in Australia.
any ideas? I can issue a refund but not an exchange.

Hey @native8,
There aren't any non-cumbersome workarounds at the moment, but I'll go as close as we can get:
- If the item being exchanged is of the same value, you could manually adjust your item inventory figures by adding one one of the returned items and subtracting the new item
- If the item being exchanged is of the same value or more, you could add the new item to a new sale then discount the difference as a new sale, then and manually update your inventory for the returned item
- If the item being exchanged is of lesser value then the new item, you could process the new item as a new sale with a 100% discount, then refund the difference from the original transaction
Hopefully we'll be able to release the "Refund to eGift Card" feature in Australia soon, which will improve things a little here!

@michellespirits I took a look and it is a little cumbersome - you'd have to first set up an eGift Card, which would require adding a minimum amount of $1 to it, then refunding the transaction to the eGift card (you could refund minus $1 that you put the the gift card to set it up). That's how you'd do it through if you wanted to explore that option.

If it helps to provide numbers to the feedback request of being able to process an exchange on the free POS app in Australia, please add us to the list! We are a school P&C made up of volunteers that recently switched to using Square to run our uniform shop, and we regularly have parents wanting to return and exchange items. It would be an extremely useful feature!
I'd like to add my vote/request for an Exchange feature in the free POS app. I'm a small Martial Arts club and sometimes parents get the size of uniform wrong and need to swap purchased item for the correct size. An Exchange feature would make not only to track inventory correctly but also but also student/parent purchases
We hear you, @ShukokaiNR, and we'll continue to advocate for this feature request with our Product Team!
It's worth noting that in the meantime, we've updated the process to refund to a gift card via the point of sale app. The update means that now an eGift card is automatically created during the refund, compared to the previous workflow which required you to set up the eGift prior to processing the refund.
Although it isn't a direct exchange, it does offer a more streamlined workaround while we wait to receive updates on this feature request. @michellespirits, @native8 and @SNPS_PandC if you haven't already been made aware of this update, have a read through the above link.

Hi Laurie, I am hoping you can help me. I have subscribed to the Square for Retail Plus which I understand does offer the Exchange Feature on it, but our POS is only coming up with a Refund or Gift Card option when customers bring an item back to exchange. Can you please advise if this is correct and if so how I get it to give us the option of an Exchange button as I can't find anywhere to add this. Thanks.

Yes, you're correct the item exchange feature is certainly available on the Square for Retail Plus plan. In terms of accessing this feature, there aren't any additional steps required to enable this, other than subscribing to this plan and ensuring you have logged in on your devices via the Square for Retail app, not the Square Point of Sale app.
I'll just double-check you've followed the below steps when attempting to issue an item exchange:
1. From the Retail POS app, tap Transactions from the navigation bar.
2. Search the receipt number or full credit card number to find the transaction.
3. Tap the transaction to refund > Return or Exchange.
4. Select item(s) to restock or Skip this step > tap Next.
5. You can either issue a refund or search your item library to add additional items to the cart. The cart amount will automatically reflect the difference between the original and replacement items.
Cart Total: Depending on the price of the replacement item, the cart total will either be negative, positive or even.
a) If the replacement item is less than the returned item, you can issue a refund to your customer’s card for the difference.
b) If new item is more, collect payment with any of the standard payment methods.
c) If the replacement item is the same cost as the original item, tap Even Exchange to close out the transaction.
